Pan is a demigod, a satyr. A satyr is a god who is half human, half goat and is a cheerful naughty forest creature in Greek mythology. Pan is the most famous, but cheerful and naughty? Pan looks more like a devil with his horns, goat's tail, hooves and goat's hair on his legs. Since the Middle Ages he has been a model of the devil. He has yellow eyes, like a nocturnal animal. The god Bacchus is his friend. Bacchus is the god of wine, the ecstasy in the dark forest. Saters are keen on anarchy, not in order.

Pan grows up in the forest nymphs, after his mother, the nymph Penelope, abandons him at birth. She can't handle that much ugliness. His father is Hermes, the god of thieves and messenger of the gods of Mount Olympus, the dynasty of father and chief god Zeus. Hermes, like Pan, is a phallic god and one who protects the herds. In short, a background good for disasters and catastrophes. Not for nothing is the term pandemic named after this unfortunate demigod.

This satyr grows up in Arcadia, a utopian land full of flowers, forests, clear springs, chirping of many birds and where it is always sunny. Pan regularly sits behind the nymphs, who try to raise him, and one in particular is known that she was not served by it. Syrinx is determined to remain a virgin and begs the goddess Gaia to help her when Pan is on her heels again. Gaia turns Syrinx into a forest of reeds. The wind blows the beautiful tones over the adjacent lake and the rest is known. Pan cuts off the reed and the pan flute is born. The ancient Greeks called the pan flute Syrinx.

As I said, Pan is a phallic god and also the naming agent I think of the oblong gland, which to see still has the most resemblance to an erection. It is a gland with two secretion functions, the endocrine and the exocrine, for the purposes of digestion, so that fats, proteins and carbohydrates can be absorbed into the intestines. Furthermore, the prefix "pan" usually means "al" or "all" or ubiquitous. I am thinking of pantheism, pan-European, pandemonium, pantheist and pantomic to name a few. In parallel, these words mean: faith in polytheism, as in ancient Greece, concerning the whole of Europe, a chaotic state with a hellish noise and crowd, someone who assumes that everyone is divine and a stage gesture to the extreme.

For medieval use Pan's appearance to use for the image of the devil I have found no reasons, but that the myth of pan's shadow throws forward our time may have become clear. In the end, this blog has become a bit of a panegyric.

Last night I dreamed that the ultimate truth cannot be known and even exists, I woke up with a shock. It's like peeling an onion, I thought at the time. When you try to remove the veils there are always new ones. And when you've completely dismantled the onion, you're left with nothing. Is reality in the sense of the ultimate truth an illusion so I wondered?

It is not possible to know the ultimate truth from this life. Once I had an intense experience while I was praying. At great speed it went up, until I was all at the ends of this world and there was a yellow light when I was aware of my body in a gaping void, and a voice heard that said, "There's nothing." That made me decide to focus my energy on a more earthly life. However, the blood often crawls where it cannot go and now I find myself reading again on the spiritual path.

According to the Tibetan Death Book, it is only possible to perceive the world behind this world when you succeed after your death to become part of it by freeing yourself in the Bardo from the chains of life. But what if the only thing you have to free yourself from and or can your own urges, feelings, ideas and character traits be in this life? Man generally seeks salvation, either in a God, a religion or at least in something he or she generally sees as higher than himself. What is it?

Suppose the search is one for our shadow and anima or animus. These are initially hidden archetypes. According to Carl Jung in the human psyche, archetypes are the universal, mythical characters in the collective unconscious of man. These archetypes are equally common to people around the world. Archetypes are intrinsic human motives and evoke deep emotions. Many people do not seem to be aware of or become aware of this. The path to go during our lives is that of awareness, recognition and implementation of these archetypes in our existence. But what about universal and earthly love?

Love is the pursuit of harmony and perhaps the most important thing we need to learn, in addition to self-knowledge. It is probably also impossible to become a harmonious human being, both inside and outside. Here comes Jung again. The idea of Jung was/is that during his life man should balance his often dualistic nature. Dualism is the idea that there are two opposite sides, for example good and evil, love and hate, body and soul or spirit. Jung was inspired by the Greek mythical figures the Dioscures, better known as the twin Castor and Pollux, one mortal and the other immortal, the constellation Gemini. In this context, the Austrian psychoanalyst and colleague of Sigmund Freud, Otto Rank, refers to the "Doubleganger'. The doppelganger is our brother, when you are a man, or sister when you are a woman, who we must discover and learn to love. That's fucking tricky, but it might not take a God. The ultimate truth is hidden in the spell "Know Yourself" on the temple of Apollo in Delphi. Maybe the dream wanted to tell me.

Gisterenochtend kwam ik tijdens het vogelen alweer de eerste narcissen tegen. Onwillekeurig moet ik dan altijd aan het verhaal van Narcissus denken bij het zien van deze bloemen. Weer zo’n bekend figuur uit de Griekse mythologie. Hij is de zoon van een riviergod en bekend om twee redenen. Narcissus is een hartstochtelijk jager en knappe jongeman en heeft vele aanbidsters, maar hij is niet geïnteresseerd in de liefde. Echo is idolaat van Narcissus, maar is eerder gestraft door Hera voor haar niet aflatende kletsen, waardoor Hera haar overspelige echtgenoot Zeus niet goed meer in de gaten kan houden. Echo kan alleen nog de laatste paar woorden van wat iemand tegen haar zegt napraten. Narcissus beledigd haar omdat hij niets van haar wil weten en zij trekt zich terug in een grot. Weer later versmaad Narcissus voor de zoveelste keer een vrouw, maar ditmaal loopt het fataal af. De vrouw is de godin Aphrodite en zij vraagt de andere goden Narcissus te leren wat het is verliefd te zijn en afgewezen te worden. Wat later ziet Narcissus zijn evenbeeld in een heilige onberoerde vijver en wordt verliefd. Het vergaat hem als allen die een hevige onbeantwoorde liefde meemaken, hij kwijnt weg. In zijn geval tot er niets meer over is van hem dan een bloem.

Mooi verhaal met een zekere tragiek. Hoe vergaat het narcisten? Mensen met een narcistische aanleg vinden zichzelf ook heel bijzonder en laten dit graag merken. Ze willen constant aandacht en bewonderd worden, Ze doen heel charmant, maar zijn niet empathisch en hebben weinig emoties. Ze zijn helaas wel zeer jaloers. Het ego is enorm en de wil tot macht is zeker aanwezig. Het enige dat helpt is ze negeren. Daar kunnen ze niet tegen. Dan verwelken ze. Hoe wordt je narcist? Een narcist heeft een laag zelfbeeld dat hij of zij overcompenseert. Hij of zij gaat zelf geloven dat het nieuwe gedrag klopt, dat hij of zij superieur en heel belangrijk is en bepaalde onvervreemdbare rechten heeft. Mogelijk is er ook een biologische oorzaak, namelijk een tekort aan serotonine of teveel van het hormoon cortisol. Uiteindelijk kan het ook een slecht gehecht zijn in de jeugd doordat de natuurlijke emotionele behoefte van het kind niet wordt vervuld door de ouders. Het kind voelt zich dan niet gezien.

Het is lastig omgaan met een narcist, wanneer je er een hechte band mee wilt. Echter, ook narcisten komen in types. Zo zitten er introverte, kwetsbare, verborgen en verlegen naturen tussen, maar ook extraverte, openlijk superieure en zich al het sociale verkeer toegeëigende, arrogante types. Met beide lijkt het kwaad kersen eten. Ze eten zelf de beste exemplaren. Wat kan je doen aan je narcistische natuur? Volgens kenners leven we in een narcistisch tijdperk, dus we krijgen er bijna allemaal wat van mee zou je denken. Je kunt in therapie gaan. Er zijn verschillende therapievormen tegenwoordig. Je hoeft niet in een bloem te veranderen. Psychotherapie kan een keuze zijn. Er wordt meestal gewerkt aan het leren stellen van realistische doelen, het leren verdragen en accepteren van kritiek en het zich leren verplaatsen in de behoeften en gevoelens van anderen. Klinkt goed toch?
