It is the ancient Roman festival of Venus Verticordia, the goddess of love and beauty (cf. the Greek Goddess Aphrodite whose cult later began in 217 BC). The worship of the goddess Fortuna Virilis is also part of this festival. Een paar jaar eerder, in 1965 wordt het nummer “Venus in furs” (Venus in bont ) van de hand van Lou Reed opgevoerd tijdens het debuutoptreden van de Amerikaanse band The Velvet Underground. Het is geïnspireerd op de gelijknamige novelle van Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, die schreef over seksuele onderwerping en naar wie de term masochisme is vernoemd.
